The first story starts when we were walking back to our hotel in Santiago after dinner in 2004, I noticed the streets were torn up with a lot of excavation & construction. Antonio asked me “Do you know what's going on? They are building refugios (bomb shelters)." I was profoundly shocked and upset.
As we walked everyday to the Taller Cultural: Lewis,
me, Idilio, Xenes, Joel & the other guest artists, everyone was laughing &
talking as usual while, horrified, I watched the progress of the Refugios…
counting a total of 15.
The shelter in this picture is at the left where you see the man bending over working with stone slabs. Lescay's wife Rosita, a Doctor, told me they were fully stocked with supplies including a blood bank.
